THEY’RE in a league of their own!
Wyong Leagues Group has stepped up to sponsor Wyong Race Club’s newest and richest race, the $500,000 The Lakes (1600m) on January 11.
Boasting overall prizemoney of $1.86m, this will be Wyong’s first Saturday stand-alone, completing the set for all five provincial clubs, and fitting perfectly as a celebration of 150 years of racing at Wyong.
Wyong Leagues Group already sponsors the $250,000 Listed Wyong Cup (2100m)- run annually in early September - and has come on board to also sponsor The Lakes.
“We’re very appreciative of the group’s continuing support of Wyong Race Club,” Wyong general manager Greg Purcell said.
“We have a really good association.
“The club has a three-year sponsorship agreement with Wyong Leagues Club in regards to the Cup, and now they have taken on first year sponsorship of The Lakes.”
Purcell says there has been great interest in the January 11 day, and is expecting a fantastic crowd, especially given it is school holidays and a lot of people are spending relaxation time on the Central Coast.
Supporting sponsors on the big program include NBN Television, De Bortoli, Central Coast Community News, Heritage Real Estate and TAB.

It’s a busy period for Wyong Race Club, which raced last Saturday and also will host the transferred Gosford feature meeting on New Year’s Eve.
The meeting is highlighted by the $300,000 Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) for fillies and mares, and $200,000 Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) for three-year-olds.
Eighteen “girls” have been entered, including interstate pair A Deel Of Humour (Queensland) and Kind Gesture (Victoria).
Wyong trainer Kristen Buchanan has entered last Saturday’s home track winner Rennata.
Thirteen three-year-olds were entered for the Guineas, and they have been extended until 11am on Tuesday (December24).
Wyong is offering a special incentive to attract racegoers to the New Year’s Eve meeting by offering FREE entry, provided bookings are made by midnight the previous day (December 30).
Meanwhile, the scheduled Gosford meeting on January 10 will now be held at Newcastle.
Because of the transfer (Gosford is hoping to resume racing on Saturday, February 22), there are distance changes to all seven programmed races.
The new program is:
Midway Benchmark 64 Hcp (900m);
CG&E Benchmark 64 Hcp (1250m)
F&M Benchmark 64 Hcp (1250m);
Class 1 Hcp (1500m);
