MONARCH’S BAND OF WELL-BRED TWO-YEAR-OLDS

JASON Micallef was not to be deterred.

His debutante Amaretto Bo’s unplaced run at the provincials at Gosford earlier this year didn’t stop him significantly growing his band with seven yearlings under he and wife Tahlia’s South Coast-based Monarch Racing Syndications banner.

And he’s pretty proud of the now two-year-olds they have purchased – all by in demand sires - with five of them fully syndicated and not a lot remaining before the “sold sign” goes up on the other two.

“We purchased at the Inglis Classic sale, the Melbourne Premier, Magic Millions and the MM June sale,” Micallef said.

“There are fillies by Ole Kirk, Tassort, Cosmic Force and Too Darn Hot and the boys are by

Ole Kirk, Blue Point, and North Pacific.

“The only two we have left to syndicate are the Blue Point colt and Cosmic Force filly.

“There is 20 per cent left in the Blue Point youngster, and 7.5 per cent in the Cosmic Force.”

Understandably, Micallef was over the moon with the result of the first metropolitan two-year-old races of the season at Royal Randwick on October 5.

The progeny of Ole Kirk featured very prominently indeed.

“Ole Kirk’s son King Kirk won the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate (1000m) for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, and his filly O’ Ole ran second in the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) for Bjorn Baker,”Micallef said.

“It could not have been a better advertisement for our two Ole Kirk youngsters.

“Richard Litt is training the gelding, and Simon Zahra has the filly in Melbourne.

“Simon also has the Too Darn Hot filly and Blue Point colt.

“Richard also trains the Cosmic Force and Tassort fillies, along with the North Pacific colt.”

The couple launched Monarch Racing Syndications last year, and enjoyed city success recently with a tried purchase Secret Plan, whom they bought online in October last year for $60,000.

The former West Aussie and Victorian gelding won a Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens in August at $41, and has since been placed at two of three Queensland metropolitan starts.

Additionally, the Micallefs also nearly brought off Grafton’s feature sprint, the Listed Ramornie. Handicap (1200m) in July, with another online purchase Bacchanalia.

The former Godolphin six-year-old fetched $70,000 in February, and as a $51 roughie was narrowly beaten by Ka Bling in the $200,000 Grafton feature.

“We have owners in our syndicates from all over Australia, and we make sure we look after them so they have the best possible racing experience,” Jason Micallef said.

“Hopefully, we will all be celebrating at The Everest meeting at Randwick on Saturday after Secret Plan wins the Benchmark 88 Handicap (1400m).”

. HOOFNOTE: Though Amaretto Bo was unplaced at her first start at Gosford in May on a heavy track, she subsequently was narrowly beaten at Goulburn the following month in a 1300m Maiden Plate against older rivals after making all the running at $14.

A $50,000 purchase at last year’s MM National yearling sale, she finished in front of odds-on favorite Shelstein, and the unplaced brigade included subsequent winners Equilibrist and Zousain Bolt.

“Amaretto Bo is back in work after a nice break, and we’re expecting good things of her as a three-year-old,” Micallef said.
